Go Red for Women
February 04, 2022
On the first Friday of February, we Wear Red to bring awareness about heart disease in women. In 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) noticed a terrifying trend – that over 500,000 American women a year die of cardiovascular disease, making it the number one killer of women. This statistic is striking, considering we’ve always attributed a heart attack as a man’s ailment. Even the symptoms of a heart attack that we learn about are tailored to men – women are more likely to experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back/jaw pain. The AHA knew it needed to make this something women think about for themselves, too. Thus, Go Red for Women was created to increase women’s heart health awareness.
