Newton Carriageway Biking and Walking Path Design
From concept through construction, HSH’s multidisciplinary team provided comprehensive planning, engineering, and construction support while seamlessly coordinating with multiple agencies and MassDOT’s adjacent Route 30 bridge replacement project.
Howard Stein Hudson partnered with the City of Newton, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), and the Solomon Foundation to reimagine the historic Newton Carriageway right-of-way along Commonwealth Avenue. The project transforms the former carriageway into a vibrant multimodal corridor that prioritizes safety, accessibility, and community connectivity.
Initially, through an extensive planning and public engagement process, with the City of Newton, Solomon Foundation, and community members, corridor-wide alternatives for a re-envisioned carriageway were studied and eventually advanced into design. Through a collaborative design process, HSH developed an innovative solution that delivers dedicated bicycle and pedestrian facilities, enhanced roadway crossings, and expanded green space along one of the region’s most heavily used recreational and commuting corridors. The design creates a safer, more comfortable experience for bicyclists, runners, walkers, and other active transportation users while thoughtfully balancing the operational needs of adjacent community destinations, including Lyons Field, where seasonal recreational activities generate significant parking demand.
From Concept through Construction
HSH’s multidisciplinary team guided the project from concept through construction, providing comprehensive engineering support every step of the way. During construction managed by MassDOT, HSH performed on-site inspections, advised the City, reviewed shop drawings and material submittals, and responded to requests from Newton to advance the project efficiently.
To maintain the City’s vision of a new multimodal Carriageway, the project required an accelerated design process to ensure seamless connection to MassDOT’s active Route 30 over the Charles River bridge replacement project. The accelerated design demonstrated HSH’s ability to successfully integrate complex infrastructure improvements across multiple agencies and active construction projects. The result is a resilient, people-focused transportation corridor that enhances mobility, strengthens community connections, and creates lasting value for residents and visitors alike.
