Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

HSH is an Equal Opportunity firm and hires based upon professional capabilities and qualifications without discrimination because of race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, ancestry, medical condition, mental or physical disability, genetic information, veteran status, any military service or application for military service, or membership in any other category protected under state or federal law.

HSH is committed to attracting, retaining, and supporting a diverse workforce.

Founded by two women working in the transportation industry, from its inception in 1987, HSH has been a company that values the enthusiasm and drive of young engineers and planners, allowing everyone the resources and tools to enhance their careers, while promoting and advocating for a healthy work/life balance. These values remain with the company today, over 35 years later. Advancing careers by women was naturally of particular interest to the company founders in an era where professional women engineers and planners were few in number.

Following this historic precept, HSH recruitment efforts makes it a point to post job openings with Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), the Boston Women’s Workforce Council (BWWC), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). WTS and SWE have similar missions: to advance women in engineering and leadership. SHPE’s goal is to serve role models in the Hispanic community; NSBE’s mission is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”

HSH wants every employee to feel comfortable bringing their whole self to work. To foster, maintain, and further this welcoming environment, an Equity and Inclusion (E&I) Committee was formed to ensure that current and future staff feel included, valued, and supported. The following provides a summary of what the E&I Committee is all about.  If you are interested in participating in with E&I Committee, please discuss with your manager/supervisor or Human Resources.

E&I Committee Goals:

  • Identify E&I strengths, issues, and opportunities.
  • Develop strategies, plans, and policy changes to meet the E&I needs of staff.
  • Provide recommendations for trainings and education to increase awareness of issues at HSH and prevent instances of insensitive, inappropriate, and offensive behavior.
  • Organize programming and events acknowledging, educating, and celebrating diversity.
  • Support Board of Directors with strategic guidance and resources on issues related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

What does the E&I Committee do?

  • Host monthly virtual coffee hours to celebrate and discuss E&I topics and official recognition months, such as Black and Women’s History months, as well as mental health check-ins;
  • Host movie nights for, among others, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and Pride Month;
  • Read and discuss E&I-themed books;
  • Create blog posts related to holidays, coffee hours, movie nights, and book club;
  • Post E&I-themed content on social media;
  • Organize DEI training; and
  • Participate in the E&I Teams channel dedicated to sharing resources, articles, podcasts, and events related to DEI.
