The Town of Sturbridge selected the intersection of Route 20 at Route 131 for improvements as it is the gateway entrance to their town. A conceptual design of a roundabout at this intersection was added to the State Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for Fiscal Year 2026. The purpose of this project is to provide improvements to the intersection of Route 20 at Route 131, Route 20 at New Boston Road, and the surrounding roadway, providing safety improvements for all modes of transportation and transforming the high-speed roadway into a renewed connection to businesses along Route 20 and down Route 131 to Sturbridge Center. Additionally, the intersection of Route 20 at New Boston Road was previously a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) crash cluster for 2016-2018 and will also receive safety improvements for all modes of travel.
