Newton Carriageway Biking and Walking Path Design
This project used the Right of Way (ROW) previously occupied by the Commonwealth Avenue carriageway to construct dedicated biking and walking facilities and improved crossings along a corridor that was already popular with bicyclists, runners, dog walkers, and users of other non-motorized modes. Following a robust design and public outreach process, HSH developed and delivered a design that maximized greenspace, provided safe and comfortable biking and walking facilities, and added several new and enhanced crossings across Commonwealth Avenue while balancing the needs of abutters such as Lyons Field which generates high parking demand during little league games. HSH continued to support the project through construction, performing on-site inspections furnishing advice to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the City, and the Contractor, responding to project shop drawing and material submittals and providing responses to Requests for Information (RFI’s) submitted by the Contractor. The project’s design coordinated with MassDOT’s bridge replacement project over the Charles River, which is in construction.
