Hampden Municipal Vulnerability (MVP) Program

Main Street over East Brook Bridge Replacement Project

With the goal of replacing the Main Street over East Brook Bridge with a more resilient structure, HSH assisted the Town of Hampden to plan and implement resiliency strategies to protect the community from threats associated with climate change. Our work includes helping the municipality to address priorities identified through their MVP Program planning process.

HSH worked with Hampden with MVP Action Grant funding to implement their priorities including assessing stormwater culvert infrastructure, developing and facilitating student planning and municipal preparedness workshops, public education, identifying Green Infrastructure (GI) and Low Impact Design (LID) solutions, and identifying locations for pollinator habitat installations. The replacement of the Main Street Bridge of East Brook was identified as the Town of Hampden’s top MVP priority.

HSH prepared the final design for an environmentally resilient Main Street over East Brook Replacement Bridge and completed all required permitting and right-of-way documents for a shovel-ready project. In addition, HSH partnered with students from the Conway School of Landscape Design to develop conceptual plans for green infrastructure that together will reduce threats from flooding events and protect the local environment.  The FY25 MVP Action Grant includes funding for two videos which will document that process and memorialize Hampden’s priorities.  These videos will serve as a resource to the community for future planning and provide a road map for other communities who share similar threats and priories associated with local climate change impacts.

This 5-minute teaser uses excerpts from the longer video to show how Hampden is working to protect its aging infrastructure across the town’s watershed.

Mother Nature Knows Best focuses on key areas for improvement and suggests nature-based solutions to protect both infrastructure and the environment from stormwater.

Bridges, Culverts, and Watersheds – OH MY! shows how some structures are too small to handle heavy rain and how the town used an MVP grant to tackle flooding and erosion.
