Bridging the Gap Between Recreation and Traffic
Residents enjoying the new Rail Trail connection, designed to expand access to the Hanover Rail Trail and create a safe, welcoming space for walking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors.
Hanover Rail Trail Crossing
Through MassDOT’s Rail Trail program, the Hanover Rail Trail was extended to connect to additional towns and trails. A section of this trail is segmented by the intersection of Hanover Street (Route 139)/Pleasant Street/Circuit Street.
Engineering a Safer Tomorrow
HSH delivered full-phase engineering, multimodal design, and construction support. Through collaborative, state-of-the-art design, the project successfully delivered:
- Enhanced Safety: Integrated advanced pedestrian signal heads, accessible pushbuttons, and high-visibility crosswalks to give users total crossing confidence.
- Universal Access: Designed a paved, 10-foot-wide shared-use path with ADA-compliant grade transitions for strollers, wheelchairs, and bicycles.
- Strategic Community Growth: Planned trail that seamlessly connects local neighborhoods directly to regional trail networks and active recreation hubs like nearby Ellis Field.

Unlock your community’s infrastructure potential
The rail trail project is a blueprint for municipal planning and engineering. HSH navigated the complex regulatory requirements between the Town, MassDOT, MassTrails, and DCR. This seamless coordination helped unlock a $379,142 MassTrails grant and local Community Preservation Funds. If your municipality is looking to secure state funding, satisfy MassDOT standards, and solve complex right-of-way challenges on your next trail or roadway project, HSH is ready to help.
