North Washington Street Bridge Replacement Project, Boston

Massachusetts Department of Transportation
Boston, Massachusetts

The North Washington Street Bridge, also known as the Charlestown Bridge, is an essential connection between Charlestown and the North End. The goal of the project is to replace the structurally deficient bridge with a new structure that will create a bridge that will be livable, walkable, green, and multi-modal. The proposed design will provide improved vehicle, pedestrian, cycling, and boat navigation facilities, and serve as a visual complement to the iconic Zakim Bridge. HSH responds to community inquiries, documents all meetings for the project website, and prepares informational briefings upon request. HSH also reviewed the contract Temporary Traffic Control Plans (TTCPs) to determine the feasibility and compatibility of closing the existing bridge and utilizing a temporary bridge; upon confirmation, HSH assisted in the design of the temporary bridge including identifying the proposed location and alignment to facilitate the diverted traffic, while also revising the TTCP, roadway profile, and roadway alignment accordingly to accommodate the temporary bridge during the closure.
