Revere Beach Parkway over MBTA Blue Line and State Road
Massachusetts Department of Transportation
Paul W. Berthiaume, P.E., was the Lead Bridge Engineer for this superstructure replacement project which required the use of accelerated construction techniques. The existing substructure was retrofitted with pre-cast concrete bridge seats and the superstructure consisted of two simple spans of steel stringers with a composite, reinforced concrete bridge deck.
The superstructure was constructed using Pre-fabricated Bridge Units (PBU’s), consisting of pairs of steel stringers with the deck pre-cast in the fabrication shop. The bridge was constructed over four (4) weekend shutdowns with Blue Line service being maintained by busing patrons. A joint at the pier was eliminated by designing and detailing a link slab to span over the beam ends. This project was performed while at another firm.
