Coffee Hour: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May 27, 2021

Once a month, HSH’s Equity and Inclusion (E&I) Committee hosts a virtual coffee hour to bring staff members together to have discussions regarding equity and inclusion. Past topics have included Black Lives Matter and Pandemic Challenges for Women in the Workplace.

Since May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, this month’s coffee hour celebrated the history and contributions of the AAPI community, while also discussing current challenges being faced. The discussion began with watching two videos: one discussing the sharp increase in anti-Asian violence and the history behind what’s driving the racism, including the Model Minority Myth; and one with members of the AAPI community talking about their experiences, both positive and negative.

The 30+ HSH attendees moved into breakout groups to discuss reactions to the videos, shared knowledge about AAPI history, and brainstormed ways to support the AAPI community. The HSH E&I Committee would like to thank everyone that participated in this great discussion and looks forward to many more.
