UNION SQUARE ROADWAY AND STREETSCAPE DESIGN
City of Somerville

Although Union Square had been studied in the past, the City of Somerville commissioned HSH to conduct an independent and objective study of the area that built upon feasible components of prior studies. In order to provide the City with a holistic view of Union Square, and suggest roadway and streetscape improvements that can be implemented, garnering community consensus remains critical.

Beginning with a clear public involvement plan, HSH recently finished its study, which included three conceptual alternatives for the Square. All three alternatives incorporate the stated goals of the community:

The alternatives take a “Complete Streets” multi-modal approach to design, accommodating autos, trucks, pedestrians, bicyclists, and buses. The HSH team worked with the community, City staff, and elected officials to choose a preferred alternative, which the City has announced will now be advanced through final design.
