SYRACUSE METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL I-81 PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROJECT
Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council

Working with the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), HSH is leading a major public involvement effort on the future of the I-81 corridor through Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse. This project, known as The I-81 Challenge, will combine technical analysis and public input to identify a viable set of potential options for addressing the future needs of the highway, particularly the elevated viaduct section through downtown Syracuse. The purpose of the project is four-fold:

This complex study warrants a rigorous and broad reaching public involvement program. As such, the HSH team has developed new branding for this initiative and a completely redesigned project Web site. The team is also leading the planning and execution of interactive workshops, educational videos, on-line questionnaires, newsletters, fact sheets, advertising display boards, and three different advisory committees. To broaden the reach of SMTC's public involvement efforts, the HSH team is also taking advantage of social media opportunities including a project blog, Facebook page, and video sharing. In addition, the HSH team is developing virtual public workshops that will be available 24/7 on the project Web site to offer even greater opportunities for public participation.
