SANDWICH, COTUIT ROAD/HARLOW ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
MassDOT

Known throughout Sandwich as the second most dangerous intersection in the area, the town took steps to investigate and remediate the dangerous conditions at Cotuit, South Sandwich, and Harlow Roads. Beginning with a traffic study in 2006, the town made some minor fixes related to better visibility and signage, but lacked the funds to implement major changes that would significantly improve safety at the intersection. Availing itself of a critical safety program through MassDOT that begins with a road safety audit, Sandwich was able to take another look at this important intersection.

Recognizing the necessity of addressing the critical safety hazards at Cotuit, South Sandwich, and Harlow Roads, HSH successfully helped Sandwich work with MassDOT to get the $800,000 project funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) in order to implement HSH’s safety recommendations that included replacing the four-way intersection with a roundabout. 25% design is complete with community input underway to advance design to 75%. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2011.
