MUSEUM ROAD AND FORSYTH WAY ROADWAY DESIGN
Working for MassDOT, HSH led the design of Forsyth Way and Museum Road in support of the expansion of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). The expansion, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architectural firm of Foster and Partners, includes an East Wing, housing the Art of the Americas and Contemporary galleries; a covered courtyard, including a skylit American sculpture court; centralized plant facilities below the courtyard for climate control of new and renovated space; enhanced educational facilities, including a new 150- to 200-seat theatre as well as seminar and classrooms; improved visitor amenities; renovated Art of Europe galleries; enhanced and expanded conservation facilities; a state-of-the-art auxiliary storage facility; and improved landscaping of Museum grounds.
HSH was responsible for designing the roadways, sidewalks, and pedestrian amenities that provide access to the museum and preparing a highway design package suitable for bidding by MassDOT and associated coordination with the MassDOT Project Review Committee and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). In order to move Museum Road, HSH also worked with the Register of Deeds and the Boston Public Works Department and the Transportation Department for Public Improvement Commission approval. The first phase of the off-site construction has been completed along the north side of the MFA at the recently reopened Fenway entrance. After successful design of these items, HSH provided contractor oversight and construction engineering that have kept the project on budget and on schedule. The second phase–reconstruction of Museum Road and Forsyth Way–has been designed and construction is expected to be completed in Spring 2011.
