GOETHALS BRIDGE REPLACEMENT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT
HSH led the public outreach effort for the Port Authority of NY & NJ and the United States Coast Guard as they conducted an environmental review and completed an Environmental Impact Statement for potential improvements to the Goethals Bridge. This bridge, built in 1928 between New Jersey and Staten Island, New York, was one of the first facilities built by the Port Authority. It is now considered by many to be functionally obsolete.
This environmental review examined several alignments. HSH led an extensive bi-state outreach program, including public scoping and public hearing processes, the establishment of a stakeholder committee and two technical advisory committees, as well other open houses, newsletters and electronic media outreach to involve key stakeholders and the general public throughout the environmental process.
