DORCHESTER AVENUE FINAL DESIGN
HSH led a multi-disciplinary team providing final design for 15 intersections along a 4-mile length of Dorchester Avenue between Old Colony Avenue in South Boston and Peabody Square in Dorchester. All intersection design upgrades include replacement of wheelchair ramps, new traffic signal equipment, and hard-wire connection to the City’s Transportation Management Center. At the 4 major intersections—Andrew Square, Glover’s Corner, Fields Corner, and Peabody Square—improvements include consolidation of curb cut access to private property and significant streetscape upgrades and landscaping. The project also includes a corridor-wide review of bicycle accommodations to include in construction plans. The $14 million project is now under construction and HSH is providing construction phase services on the project.
Originally commissioned through the City of Boston, the Dorchester Avenue project is being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus funding), administered by MassDOT. HSH prepared the Project Need Form (PNF) and Project Information Form (PIF) to assure the project’s eligibility for Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and stimulus funding. The project will improve traffic operations for all users (autos, trucks, pedestrians, and bicycles) and make significant aesthetic improvements in 4 neighborhood business districts while increasing merchant activity.
