CAUSEWAY STREET RECONSTRUCTION

The Causeway Street Reconstruction Project is a vital component of the City of Boston‚s Crossroads Initiative, whose overall intent is to link 12 downtown streets to the Rose Kennedy Greenway˜reconnecting neighborhoods and destinations once cut off by the former elevated Central Artery (I-93). The key goals of the Causeway Street Reconstruction Project are to transform Causeway Street into a “great pedestrian-oriented boulevard,” make it the “anchor” for the Bulfinch Triangle/North Station business and entertainment district, reconnect the West End and North End neighborhoods, and transform the Bulfinch Triangle/North Station area into a more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly place. One of the top pedestrian zones of the City, the reconstructed Causeway Street will improve traffic operations and safety, provide significant upgrades to bicycle accommodations, and improve pedestrian accommodation, convenience, and safety.

As lead consultant, HSH is managing a multi-disciplinary consultant team on the design of roadway and streetscape improvements associated with the reconfiguration of Causeway Street from conceptual design through construction. The redesign takes a “Complete Streets” approach to project design driven in large part by the wide corridor and heavy pedestrian volumes associated with the TD Garden and North Station. The team is working closely with the City‚s Public Works Department, the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Boston Transportation Department. Significant abutter and stakeholder coordination efforts have proven not only to enhance the overall project design but also to foster excitement in the community.

The Project is seeking state funding through Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) as well as pursing design waiver requests and enhancement funding for key design features. Final design also includes widened sidewalks, improved paving and surface materials, urban design features, bicycle accommodation, landscaping, street furniture, and enhanced wayfinding. Some of the many design challenges include: subsurface utilities, the remnant foundations from the elevated MBTA Green Line, MBTA Orange and Green Line Tunnels and the new I-93 tunnel structures. The team is currently producing the MassDOT 25% design drawings.
