ATLANTIC WHARFFor over a hundred years, Fort Point Channel, located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Congress Street, contained warehouses for seafaring activity. The area became known as Russia Wharf in the 1800’s because ships that docked there often did a brisk trade with St. Petersburg, Russia. The completion of the Central Artery/Tunnel project spurred a revitalization of Boston’s waterfront, which had become disconnected from the city for many years when the elevated I-93 roadway was built between the waterfront and the city in the 1950s. Part of the development included the transformation of three historic buildings into the LEED Gold Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf) project. HSH provided transportation studies, including those for the City’s Article 80 Large Project review and review under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act, as well as traffic design, including parking and loading. The 31-story mixed-use redevelopment consists of 500,000 square feet of office space, 265 residential units, and ground floor retail and community spaces, supported by a 650-space parking garage located below-grade. Public ferry docks and the creation of the Harborwalk adjacent to Fort Point Channel were also built as part of the redevelopment.
